American Kennel Club
Advance the study, breeding, exhibiting, running and maintenance of purebred dogs.
We recommend that all of our pets be spayed or neutered, however if you have made the desicion to breed please keep these few things in mind. You should contact a reputable breeder for that breed and aquire some mentoring BEFORE starting. You should know what to expect, what kind of comittment you are about to embark upon both finacially as well as emotionally & ethically. Alot is involved in selecting dogs that will not pass down undesirable traits. You should know what to expect for that particular breed, some breeds require C-sections. You should have a general knowledge for how long the gestation period is, signs of welping, how long labor should progress until medical intervention should be started, how long it should be in between puppies, what to do in the event of in emergency situations, how to help struggling puppies nurse, anomolies to look for in newborns, the appropriate medical care the newborn pups will require until thier placement in new homes, instructions to give new owners regarding home care & follow up vet care, just to name a few. If your breeder can not answer all these questions find one who can to mentor you. We also believe prior to even begining breeding that all prospective puppies already have a placement in homes, or your willingness to keep all puppies after thier arrival. Our shelters are overrun already with unwanted pets.
